Calculator FAQ

How the calculation works

Common questions about how a gold loan estimate is worked out.

How is the loan estimate calculated?

The estimate multiplies four things: your gold's weight, its purity (the karat), the current gold price per gram, and the loan-to-value percentage you choose. In short: weight times purity gives your pure gold content, times the price gives the gold value, and times the LTV gives the estimated loan.

Why does purity (karat) change the value?

Gold is often mixed with other metals for durability. Only the pure gold portion holds gold value. 24K is about 99.9% pure, 22K is 91.6%, 18K is 75%, 14K is 58.5%, and 10K is 41.7%. The calculator uses your karat to work out how much of the weight is actually gold.

What is the difference between grams and troy ounces?

Both are units of weight for gold. Jewellery is usually weighed in grams, while coins and bullion are often quoted in troy ounces. One troy ounce equals about 31.1 grams. The calculator lets you enter either, and converts automatically.

What does loan-to-value (LTV) mean?

LTV is the share of your gold's value offered as a loan, shown as a percentage. For example, at 70% LTV, a loan would be about 70% of the gold's assessed value. The slider lets you explore different scenarios; the figure here is illustrative only.

Where does the gold price come from?

The price shown is the current market (spot) price of pure gold in Canadian dollars, converted to a per-gram figure. It is indicative and updates from a live source; you can also type in your own price if you prefer.

Why is my actual offer different from the estimate?

This tool is a general estimate. A real figure depends on a professional appraisal of your gold's exact purity and weight, and the market rate at the time. The calculator cannot verify your gold, so treat the result as a guide, not a firm offer.

Does the estimate include any fees or interest?

No. The calculator shows only an estimated loan value based on your gold. It does not calculate interest, fees, or repayment terms. Those are discussed directly when you get a quote.
